Drumming with Mindfulness Workshops
Drumming Out Loud! workshops are fun, supportive, mindfulness-based drum circle classes for beginners and experienced drummers alike. You’ll learn to play the djembe and other African drums in a polyrhythmic style. Along the way, we’ll explore using mindfulness to expand our senses, more easily experience flow when drumming, and become more expressive, whether playing a groove or improvising. In addition, we’ll see how employing mindfulness techniques can increase self-confidence and bring about a greater sense of connectedness.
No prior drumming experience is necessary; all ages and abilities are welcome. Drums are available for workshops or you can bring your own; drums are often available for purchase.
Drumming with Mindfulness at St. Mark’s
Join me at the St. Mark’s Meditation Center on Monday, January 29 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. for silent meditation and the chance to drum in community. All are welcome.
I will talk about and demonstrate the relationship between mindfulness and drumming. I will bring drums for everyone to play on this evening, as well.
This is part of the meditation group’s weekly gathering; every Monday evening, the group meditates and has a dharma talk and discussion led by a peer or guest.
All are welcome to join us in Baxter Hall (our parish hall). Questions? Email Michelle Rivard
Creativity Through Mindfulness Workshop at All Souls
Using the format of a drum circle, we’ll explore using mindfulness to unlock our creative powers. We’ll learn to groove and improvise while playing West African polyrhythms. Along the way, we’ll see how mindfulness can help us expand our senses, more easily experience flow, and feel a greater sense of joy and connectness.
Beginners are especially welcome - after all, one of the goals is to cultivate a Beginner’s Mind. Bring yourself, an open mindset, and a drum if you have one. Drums will also be provided. If you do need a drum, please RSVP to me by email first so that I can insure there will be enough drums to go around.
We’ll meet in the sanctuary of All Souls Church, Unitarian, in Washington DC, from 7-9, on November 15. Try to arrive a few minutes early, so we can start promptly at 7. Suggested donation is $20.

Drumming Out Loud Outdoors Sept 9-16-30, 2-4pm
The return of the backyard drumming with mindfulness workshop! Our hosts have offered us their large, peaceful, nature-filled backyard in the Brookland neighborhood of DC. And they have a large tent to safely - and dryly - accommodate us in the event of rain.
Held over three Saturdays in September - Sept 9, 16, and 30 - this is designed as a course of 3 classes, each covering a slightly different set of topics. Still, each class is self-contained and you can come in at any point. Sign up for individual classes or save money and purchase a 2- or 3-day bundle. Early bird tickets are available through September 2.
If you don't already have a drum or are looking for a new one, beautiful handmade African drums built by Amani Konan are available for rent or purchase. Tickets are at dwmsept2023.eventbrite.com.
